2017 Chilton St James Student Trip to Mexico Departing from New Zealand - PRIVATE TRIP
Thank you for your interest in visiting Mexico during the September 2017 school holidays to assist with building homes for the poor in the slums of Tijuana. If you are a Spanish language student this trip is ideal for language immersion practicum. The group will be flying from Wellington to Los Angeles (LAX) on Saturday 30th September 2017 and then driving the 4 hours to Rosarito in Mexico where we will be staying. The group departs LAX on Monday 9th October 2017 and lands back in Wellington on Wednesday 11th October 2017.

Flights & Trip Budget:
We are currently sourcing a group airfare however there are often internet specials to LAX during the first 3 months of each year which can be considerably lower than the group airfare so the plan is to fundraise for all airfare money first so we can take advantage of any early airfare specials to the USA. In the meantime we have used a group airfare estimate for budgeting purposes.

In Mexico, sharing a room with another person of same gender in a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom apartment. 4 or 6 people to an apartment (one of whom is an adult over 18 yrs). In LA, sharing a room with 2 or 4 people of same gender in a hotel.
Transport: Hired vans plus SUV.
Building Contribution: The Chilton St James team will be responsible to raise US$8500 to fund the building materials needed to build the house.
Vaccinations: You will need to consult your doctor, however common vaccinations required are Tetanus, Diphtheria, MMR, Hepatitis A & flu vax, chicken pox (unless you have had it). Remember it’s not just you who needs protection – it’s the Mexican kids and families you interact with as well.
Visas: Entrance to the US is on the visa waiver program although prior to departure you will need to apply online for an ESTA (electronic authorization to travel to the US). No visa required for Mexico.
Travel insurance: is compulsory and must include coverage for volunteer building. A group policy underwritten by Allianz has been included in the trip cost assuming no pre existing medical conditions.
Parent adult ratio: As the apartments sleep 6 the adult/student ratio is 1 adult to 4-5 students.

The team will assemble at Wellington International Airport where you depart on your flight to Los Angeles. A Break Free Expeditions team member will meet you at Los Angeles Airport on arrival, and transfer you by road to Baja, Mexico. After a rest day at the beach, we head out to the slums to meet the families we will be building for. Each home takes 15 people three days to build, and no prior building experience is necessary!
During the week, we will also visit a local orphanage and school (if open), throw a party for the kids, and deliver food, toys and clothes to these precious, but very needy children. Once the house building is completed, we celebrate by hosting a street fiesta for the neighbors.
In the evenings, we return to our accommodation (hotel or condos) where there is time to explore the street markets and sample local cuisine. Once the building and our time in Mexico has been completed we cross back over the border and head to Disneyland for a days fun before returning to NZ. You also have the option to extend your stay (own cost and arrangements) a few more days to experience the highlights of the US or Mexico so long as you are traveling with your parent or trip guardian.
